Sometime in the fall of 2002, Curt and Cathy Johnson approached me while I was working at Home Depot. They asked me if I would be interested in becoming a volunteer leader with Young Life. I knew about Young Life because some of my friends in high school were involved, but I never went myself. For some reason, I accepted their invitation to get involved. I clearly had no idea what I was getting myself into. It wasn’t until January of 2003 when I officially became a leader. Becoming a volunteer leader with Young Life marked the beginning of my life in ministry. After being a volunteer leader for a few years, I became a team leader. In December of 2007 I was ordained as a Deacon at Friendship Baptist Church where I am currently a member. I joined Young Life staff in January of 2010 as a part of the Teacher Staff Initiative. Now I’m blessed with being the Kansas City Urban Young Life Area Director.
Through my experience in Young Life my faith has grown tremendously. I have had the opportunity to sharpen my skills as a leader. I have benefited greatly from people believing in me, affirming me, and praying for me and my development. In addition to all the excitement of a new career in ministry, I just got married to the love of my life, Andrea, in October . The task before me is great and challenging. There is a lot of work to be done. I approach it with enthusiasm and anticipation because I know that God is going to use the ministry of Young Life to do wonderful things in the lives of kids throughout Kansas City.
